Spectacles have been a disaster for Snapchat


Snap Inc., which owns Snapchat, revealed in its abysmal third quarter earnings report that it lost roughly $40 million attempting to push Spectacles, its camera-equipped sunglasses.

It was a bold, and seemingly foolish, strategy to launch Spectacles after we all witnessed Google Glass crash and burn. Glass users quickly became known as “Glassholes,” and stifled conversation whenever they came creeping around recording everything.

With a young and enthusiastic user base, and relentless tech media hype regarding “wearables,” perhaps Snap thought Spectacles would fare better.
